Many Charlotte commercial sites still run analog cameras on coax with a standalone DVR. That setup can work — until you need better night image quality, remote access, or integration with access control and alarm events.
Signs it is time to move
- Investigators or insurers cannot pull usable footage after an incident
- You are paying for truck rolls every time someone needs a clip
- Doors and cameras live on separate systems with no shared audit trail
- Expansion requires new homerun cable runs you do not want to repeat
The question is rarely “IP or analog?” — it is which views matter most, and what your network and retention policies can support.
A practical migration path
- Document existing DVR channels, cable paths, and retention needs
- Replace high-value views first: exits, cash handling, loading docks
- Standardize on one VMS with secure remote access and role-based users
- Budget full IP coverage over 12–24 months if capital is tight
We often recommend retaining usable analog channels temporarily while you standardize on a single platform. Video surveillance consultations include a walk-through of head-end equipment, network capacity, and what to tackle now versus next fiscal year.
