Cold weather is when neglected camera plants show themselves. A Charlotte-area warehouse called after the first freeze because several perimeter views went soft overnight — not because the cameras “died,” but because firmware two versions behind had a known low-temperature defect the manufacturer had already patched.
What we look for on a winter walk-through
- Which cameras are on current firmware versus two or more releases behind
- Outdoor housings with cracked seals or failed heaters
- NVR disks that were already marginal in July and will not survive a January spike
- Who still has the admin password — and whether it is still the former facilities manager
Firmware is not glamorous. It is also cheaper than discovering in January that the dock cameras you count on for theft review never recorded the night the pipes froze.
